Out Of The Woods come from Dylan Thomas's 'ugly lovely' Swansea in Wales, a seaside town at the end of the M4 motorway, on the edge of the wild and beautiful Gower peninsular. They are brother and sister duo Pierre (lead vocals/guitar/percussion) and Carys Donahue Davies (cello), Raymond Church (lead guitar/vocals) and Adam Carter (percussion/vocals).

Pierre (b1979) and Carys (b1984) were born to a piano teaching American mother and a self-styled aging rock star of a father in a wooden house by the sea near Swansea. Their musically inclined parents exposed them at a young age to their eclectic taste in music from singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, John Martyn, Steve Earle, Nick Drake, Van Morrison, Hank Williams and Neil Young to classics like Elvis, The Beatles, Jonny Cash, John lee Hooker and even PJ Harvey and The Pixies.

Starting with the cello at the age of 11 then moving on to the drums and playing with various bands around Swansea, it wasn’t until 2010 that Pierre began to write and sing songs after spending 10 years on the road, living and travelling in places like Australia, Mexico, Germany, Canada & the United States. Taking inspiration from his travels, his upbringing, and the picturesque surroundings of South Wales he started creating songs that are alternately lush and intimately earthy, built on space, simple rhythms and haunting harmonies that have touches of Americana and British Folk. Initially going by the name The Gentle Sea, he was soon joined by sister Carys on cello and local singer Jemma Krysa, along with Raithe laurance on slide guitar and they recorded and released the EP ‘View from the hill’ along with performances all over the UK, including airplay and a live session on BBC Radio Wales, gaining a reputation for playing intimate, soft, soothing melodies that draw the audience in. In mid 2011 Jemma and Raithe left the band by mutual consent, and they were replaced by Ray Church on lead guitar and Adam Carter on percussion and backing vocals under the new name Out Of The Woods.

With a new sound and style, they recorded the single ‘Calling Out Your Name’ in January 2012, which has since been gaining positive reviews online along with radio airplay, and will be ‘single of the week’ from April 23rd on BBC Radio Wales. They plan to independently release an EP by autumn 2012.
